1911 – 2007

Italian-American composer and librettist

  • Often referred to himself as an American composer

  • Best known for his operas & being the founder of 3 international performing arts festivals

  • Classic Christmas opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors"

  • Pulitzer Prizes for "The Consul" (1950) and for "The Saint of Bleecker Street" (1955)

  • Long friendship and collaboration with Samuel Barber (1910-1981)
